This book is so underrated. Red Winter is a beautifully written novel about Japanese mythology. It has spectacular world-building and a strong, empowered female character who goes through amazing development.
It’s about a Kamigakari named Emi. She was chosen by Amaterasu (a Japanese Goddess) to be her host, from the age of nine. She was hidden from the world, and she gave up all her life for this task, but she soon learns that not all is what it seems.
I’ve read a lot of books set in Japan, but none as culturally aware and enriching as this. There’s also the super great additions of art in the book that just show you specific scenes and how the characters look like — wow. Just wow. Annette Marie did an outstanding job writing this book. World-building with all those elements of Japanese mythology and culture, along with all those mythical creatures – I’m in love with this book. I simply can’t praise this book enough.
