Happy Tuesday again, everyone! #TopTenTuesday is hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl, and if you’re interested, you can find a list of the future (and past) prompts by clicking on her blog name.
I’m awfully cutting it close to Wednesday, but it’s still Tuesday in some timezone, so it counts! This week’s prompt is (as you can see in the header): favorite couples! While I had a very hard time compiling this list, I also cheated and gave some of my other favorite ones shoutouts at the end. I found it incredibly hard to rank these ships, and note that even if a lot of ships that I like didn’t make it into this list, I still love them. I even doubled some of the ships I like from the same series since I really couldn’t make up my mind!
Without further ado, let’s check out my favorite couples!
“I never thought I’d love someone this way.” His hard eyes almost soften. “I never thought I could, but you’ve made me love my life more than I ever fucking have. I can’t even imagine spending the rest without you.” —Long Way Down, Krista & Becca Ritchie
““Come here, Sul.” Akara waves her to sit on the green beanbag beside him, the bowl of chips on his lap. She smiles bright, and then tries to grab a chip. He hoists the bowl over his head, teasing. Teasing? I’ve known that Akara understands everything about Sulli, her haits, her likes and dislikes- I just never honed in on their “friendship” until..…”—Damaged Like Us, Krista & Becca Ritchie
I don’t think words could express how much the Meadows family has very much made a big impact in my life! A lot of my friends were ones I met through this series, and even though the authors completely screwed us over (seriously, blocking and shaming fans for giving constructive criticism?), it has been one that is super close to my heart. Ryke has been there for Daisy through her ups and downs, and she’s been there for him through his worst moments too. I’m absolutely a sucker for the sunny-girl-broody-but-soft-on-the-inside-guy, so really, no one should be surprised Raisy has maintained their position as the top ship in my heart. I have a Raisy-themed tattoo I want to get in the near future, too.
Kitsulli might technically be considered cheating since they aren’t a couple yet (haha 2021 come thru!), but they feel like a couple I’ve basically birthed. When Damaged Like Us first released, I immediately grew attached to these characters and even made their ship name (that quickly caught on) for them. I’ve met so so many great people through the Kitsulli group chat on Twitter, and we still frequently talk about the breadcrumb moments we get before their book arrives (if it arrives). This couple has the potential for the greatest relationship KB have ever written, and I love to see where their dynamic will take them. They’ve known each other for over four years, and as her bodyguard, Akara knows that there are boundaries he really shouldn’t ever cross, and I’m excited to see him and his strong resolve break.
2) Annabeth Chase & Percy Jackson | Percy Jackson & the Olympians
Percabeth is a ship that I’ve grown up with. It’s the ship that got me reading, and it’s the ship that will keep me reading. There are a lot of couples I’ve come across since I started reading books, and Percy and Annabeth are really THAT ship: the one that’s developed over the years, and one that you know won’t end because of a petty argument. They’ve been through so much more than they signed up for, and I love seeing a ship that really stands still even through time. They have amazing chemistry, cute nicknames (Seaweed Brain! Wise Girl!) and the scenes between them are so sweet.
3) Cress Darnel & Carswell Thorne | The Lunar Chronicles
“Captain,” she murmured. “I think I’m in love with you.” An eyebrow shot up. She counted six beats of his heart before, suddenly, he laughed. “Don’t tell me it took you two whole days to realize that. I must be losing my touch.” — Cress, Marissa Meyer
The best ship in TLC! Fight me. Cress and Thorne are the purest of the pure, and I naturally gravitate towards ships with similar dynamics as them. I read this series yeaaaars ago, and I would still list them as one of my top ships, no questions asked. Their dynamic is so heartwarming, and it’s even better when you remember that Cress is based on Rapunzel and Thorne could very well be her Flynn Rider.
4) Rhy Maresh & Alucard Emery | Shades of Magic
“But what they’d had—it was more than stolen kisses between silk sheets, more than secrets shared only by starlight, more than a youthful dalliance, a summer fling. And Alucard was here to prove it. To lay his heart bare before Rhy, and the Rose Hall, and the rest of London.” — A Conjuring of Light, V.E. Schwab
Oh god, where to start with this one? I think I went into SOM without knowing who these two were, but I was pleasantly surprised that I grew so attached to these cheeky guys so much before it was confirmed that they were a couple. Alucard would literally go to the end of the world to make Rhy smile. This lovely biracial ship deserves so much more love.
5) Will Solace & Nico di Angelo | Heroes of Olympus
“Nico,” I said at last, “shouldn’t you be sitting at the Hades table?”
He shrugged. “Technically, yes. But if I sit alone at my table, strange things happen. Cracks open in the floor. Zombies crawl out and start roaming around. It’s a mood disorder. I can’t control it. That’s what I told Chiron. ”
“And is it true?” I asked.
Nico smiled thinly. “I have a note from my doctor.”
Will raised his hand. “I’m his doctor.”
Another ship by Uncle Rick! This is the sunniest ship I’ve ever encountered in my life, and I would do anything to keep the two of them happy. Nico is so easy to relate to, and he’s such a complex character, especially when it comes to feeling sad and alone in this world. The fact that Rick gave him Will, someone who would love him no matter what, is so beautiful. I love the dynamic the two of them have together. Also mega plus points to Uncle Rick for his books getting gayer and gayer with every single release. I love him.
6) Lucy Hutton & Josh Templeman | The Hating Game
“Josh thought you were lying about your date because he can’t imagine you with anyone but himself.” — The Hating Game, Sally Thorne
This book really solidified my love for the enemies to lovers trope, and I am so thankful for that. Josh and Lucy are so easy to love and root for. Their slow burn and perfect build up couldn’t have been done in a more perfect way, and the witty banter was so engaging. They made me smile, cry, and grin so many times within the span of two hours, and I had a great time watching them hate each other less, and less….and eventually falling in love. Whenever I enter a slump, I just open this book and read their beautiful moments all over again.
And yes, the epilogue in 99 Percent Mine made me cry.
I grin at her enthusiasm. “Did you like the little gun-finger I flashed you after the goal? All for you, baby.”
She grins back. “Sorry to burst your bubble, but you were actually pointing at the old guy a few seats over. He totally freaked out and started shouting to everyone that you scored that goal for him, and then I heard him ask his wife if maybe you knew that he was just diagnosed with diabetes, so I didn’t have the heart to tell him who the goal was really for.” —The Deal, Elle Kennedy
“McCarthy tries to get her attention by whispering something against her neck, but her eyes remain on Jake. And his remain on her.”—The Chase, Elle Kennedy
Okay! So these two couples have so many moments where I couldn’t stop myself from grinning. Both of these are sort of enemies to lovers couples too, and their build-up is just great. Hannah and Garrett have been through so much shit in their lives, and though they both have confident exteriors, they completely melt in each other’s presence. Hannah starts off hating and wanting nothing to do with him too, and it is so heartwarming reading from their POVs.
As for Brenna and Jake, they’re probably my favorite ship of Elle’s. Their book isn’t officially out yet, but it’s so easy to fall in love with them even with the breadcrumbs they got in The Chase. Jake is the captain of the Harvard hockey team, and Brenna is the daughter of the rival team’s coach. It’s an obvious hate-to-love book, but their dynamic and sexual tension outsold every single ship I know. I’m also a big softie for cocky guys and badass girls, and since both characters fit into those categories, this was a pretty easy win.
I was lucky enough to receive an advanced copy of this book, and you can see my review here!
8) Wren & Lei | Girls of Paper and Fire
“Instead of disappearing, she makes me feel reappeared. Reimagined. Her touch shapes me, draws out the boldness that had been hiding in my core.” — Girls of Paper and Fire, Natasha Ngan
Two girls who love each other and fight for the chance to be with one another despite the obstacles ahead of them and the traumatic things they’ve faced — this is a couple that I absolutely adore. I love seeing Lei making sense of her feelings and Wren’s hard wall breaking down only for her. There is so much tension, so many touching moments between these two characters, that they’re impossible not to love.
9) Jasmine Santos & Ivan Lukov | From Lukov with Love
“I love you so much I spend all day with you, and it still isn’t enough for me,” he kept going. I stopped breathing. “I love you so much, if I can’t skate with you, I don’t want to skate with anyone else.” Holy. Fuck. “I love you so fucking much, Jasmine, that if I broke my ankle during a program, I would get up and finish it for you, to get you what you’ve always wanted.” — From Lukov with Love, Mariana Zapata
AAAHHH okay this couple hit me so hard because of my love for figure skating AND as mentioned multiple times beforehand, enemies to lovers relationships. I’m a figure skater myself and reading about Jasmine slowly learning to trust Ivan and vice versa felt so real to me. I loved their antics, and how they couldn’t spend time together without one throwing insults at each other (seriously, that’s how I felt with my friends in the sport!). Ivan comes off as such a jerk at the start, but he is truly a guy with the biggest heart. As victims of Mariana’s signature slow-burn, Ivan and Jasmine become best friends before getting together and I think that really played a big part in why they’re one of my favorite couples. After all, trust isn’t something easily earned, and especially in a competitive industry like figure skating, you don’t always immediately get together with someone you’ve known for years.
10) Emi & Shiro | Red Winter
“Because you are more to me now. Because you keep secrets like a kami and I’m curious what you hide. Because you are lonely and scared and I don’t understand why. Because you trust me when you know you shouldn’t. Because I believe you when you say you will keep your word.” — Red Winter, Annette Marie
Being an anime lover, it was pretty much set in stone that I would grow to love Shiro and Emi’s relationship. It’s kind of a mix between Noragami and Kamisama Kiss—two shows I love—so I immediately grew attached. Shiro can be cold and aloof at times, but when Emi’s around, he seems to immediately thaw and turn into a shameless flirt. This particular ship doesn’t have outright romance until further in the trilogy, but it’s the attraction, tension and smolders that really got me.
Special Mention to the following book couples that didn’t make it to the list but I would give my left leg for their happy endings:
1) Kestrel & Arin | The Winner’s Curse
2) Sydney Sage & Adrian Ivashkov | Bloodlines
3) Tessa Gray & Will Herondale | The Infernal Devices
4) Juliette Ferrars & Aaron Warner | Shatter Me
5) Zoya Nazyalensky & Nikolai Lantsov | Grishaverse
6) Abby Jones & Jessica Tran | Not Your Sidekick
*Softest!!!! couple!! I’ve ever read!!!
7) Penryn & Raffe | Angelfall
Here’s a bonus list of my favorite anime couples who I would spend eternity crying over:
1) Oikawa Tooru & Iwaizumi Hajime | Haikyuu!!
*They’re childhood best friends who support each other no matter what and complement one another perfectly. need I say more?
2) Kirishima Eijirou & Bakugo Katsuki | My Hero Academia
3) Kujou Mikoto & Yanagi Naoto | Last Game
4) Son Hak & Yona | Yona of the Dawn
5) Nagisa Shiota & Karma Akabane | Assassination Classroom
And lastly, here are my favorite couples from television:
1) Amy Santiago & Jake Peralta | Brooklyn Nine-Nine
2) Eun Bong-Hee & Noh Ji-Wook | Suspicious Partner
3) Sanem Aydin & Can Divit | Erkenci Kus
4) Marinette Dupain-Cheng & Adrien Agreste | Miraculous Ladybug
5) Lance & Keith | Voltron
*As much as I love this ship, I wouldn’t recommend supporting the show after what they did with their characters of color. Fanon > Canon.
6) Xiao Xi & Jiang Chen | A Love So Beautiful
