The moment I hit the last page and read that everything went to hell in this book, I yelled out “WHAT THE FUCK” and my roommate popped his head in my room and asked if I needed help. So yeah, I guess you can say this book definitely affected the fuck out of me.
Karou lives two lives: running errands for the devil who has raised her since birth, and being a sort-of-regular art student studying in Prague. She’s really cool, she has blue hair and can speak over twenty languages. Despite that though, she doesn’t really understand who she is, or how she came to be. She doesn’t have parents, apart from the chimaera who’ve raised her. Her friends don’t really know much about her at all. On one of her errands though, she encounters Akiva, a seraph, and he tries to kill her since there’s an age-old war between angels and chimaera. She realizes that he has the answers to the questions she’s had all her life, and they’re a lot worse than what she expects.
This book has been on my TBR for god knows how long, and for some reason, I only decided to pick it up now. Daughter of Smoke & Bone was amazing! I loved Laini Taylor’s writing and the characters in this have so much depth and personality and just so much!!! chemistry!!! that it’s almost impossible to fall in love with and root for them. I’m almost never a fan of insta-love in books but this just made sense. The .5 drop comes from the confusion that many readers aside from myself definitely experienced, but that didn’t really last since the ending of the book answered everything and blew all the expectations I had out of the water in the process.
Laini Taylor perfectly balances romance, action, and mystery. Her way of storytelling is just amazing! Daughter of Smoke & Bone is so fast-paced that it was really hard for me to put down too. The world-building is stellar, and it bridges so many different worlds together. I have no idea why people aren’t talking about this, but I hope that more and more choose to pick it up.

I cannot describe my love for this book tbh. This series is one of my all-time favorites. I remember staying up all night reading it because I couldn’t stop flipping the pages. Great review!
This is my favourite book. Forever. The whole series is brilliant!
I just finished book two last night and I am absolutely in love with both. I can’t believe I put this series off for so damn long!
I’ve heard such mixed things about this book, but it sounds like this is quite a bender, haha! Thank you for sharing this review; I’m keen to read it because I actually have the physical copies of these books, and I’m hoping to read every book that I have in my bookshelf. 😂
